Philosophy

Level 3 Progress 4

Your young person independently gives detailed and accurate explanations of a range of philosophical questions. They use key terms, thinkers and examples precisely and explain the reasoning behind different ideas.

They independently use sources to analyse and compare religious and non-religious viewpoints. They apply the viewpoints to familiar and unfamiliar problems and examine strengths, limitations and effects on actions or society.

They build a sustained argument using relevant evidence, test assumptions, weigh competing explanations, address a counterargument and reach a detailed, logically supported personal judgement.

Level 3 Progress 3

Your young person accurately explains a range of philosophical questions and ideas using relevant key terms, thinkers and examples. They explain why the questions are open to debate and make important distinctions clearly.

They use sources to explain and compare religious and non-religious viewpoints and show how beliefs or values lead to different responses. They apply the viewpoints to a studied problem.

They develop a clear line of reasoning, use evidence, explain more than one possible answer and reach a supported personal judgement after responding to a different view.

Level 3  Progress 2

Your young person describes several philosophical questions and explains some taught ideas, key terms, thinkers or examples. Some details, distinctions or explanations need greater accuracy or development.

They describe religious and non-religious viewpoints and make some links among beliefs, values and responses. Their use of sources, comparison or application to a problem needs more detail.

They give a personal opinion with relevant reasons and recognise another possible answer. Parts of the reasoning, evidence, response to the other view or final justification need greater development.

Level 3   Progress 1

Within Level 3 tasks, your young person identifies a philosophical question and recalls some relevant information when prompted. They need support to explain the idea accurately or show why it is debatable.

They identify a religious or non-religious viewpoint and state a simple response when given a source or prompts. They need support to explain, apply or compare the viewpoints.

They state their own view and give a simple reason when prompted. They need support to link reasons to evidence, consider another answer or build a clear and supported conclusion.

They independently analyse and compare Christian responses, a taught response from Islam or Buddhism, and the non-religious viewpoint of Utilitarianism. They use sources accurately and examine how beliefs and values affect actions, society, strengths and limitations.

They confidently apply different viewpoints to familiar and unfamiliar conflict situations, weigh competing reasons and consequences, address another argument and reach a detailed, well-supported personal judgement.

Level 3 Progress 3

Your young person accurately explains why war is a moral issue and explains relevant causes and consequences using knowledge from topics such as nuclear weapons, Just War Theory, pacifism or the War on Terror.

They use sources to explain a Christian response, a response from Islam or Buddhism, and a non-religious response such as Utilitarianism. They explain how the beliefs or values behind each viewpoint lead to a response to war.

They apply relevant values and viewpoints to a conflict situation, explain possible consequences, compare responses and give a clear personal conclusion supported by evidence and reasons.

Level 3  Progress 2

Your young person describes war as a moral issue and explains some causes or consequences using relevant examples. Some factual detail, moral significance or cause-and-effect links need greater development.

They describe Christian, world-religion and non-religious responses and make some links between beliefs, values and actions. Some source use, comparison or explanation needs more detail.

They apply some values or viewpoints to a conflict situation and give a personal opinion with reasons. Parts of the analysis, comparison, consequences or final justification need greater development.

Level 3  Progress 1

Within Level 3 tasks, your young person identifies a cause or consequence of war and recalls some information about nuclear weapons, Just War Theory or pacifism when prompted. They need support to connect facts to the moral questions.

They identify a religious teaching or moral viewpoint and state a simple response to war when given prompts or a source. They need support to explain how beliefs and values lead to actions or how viewpoints differ.

They state their view about a conflict situation and give a simple reason when prompted. They need support to apply viewpoints, consider consequences, respond to another view or build a supported conclusion.
