Map Skills

Level 3 Progress 4

Your young person independently selects the right map-reading method and uses grid references, symbols, compass directions, scale and contour information accurately and consistently, even when the task is less familiar.

They confidently use different maps and atlases to find and interpret increasingly complex physical and human features in Scotland, the UK, Europe and the wider world.

They combine precise evidence from at least two sources to reach a detailed conclusion. They clearly explain how contrasting landscapes affect settlement, land use or economic activity.

Level 3 Progress 3

Your young person independently and accurately uses the main map-reading methods, including grid references, symbols, compass directions, scale and contour information.

They use a range of maps and atlases to find and interpret increasingly complex physical and human features in Scotland, the UK, Europe and the wider world.

They use evidence from at least two sources to reach a supported conclusion and give at least two clear explanations of how contrasting landscapes affect human activity.

Level 3  Progress 2

Your young person uses most of the main map-reading methods with generally accurate results. They sometimes need a prompt or help to check an answer.

They use more than one map to find and interpret physical and human features in different areas. Some answers contain errors or need more detail.

They use evidence from two sources to reach a relevant conclusion and explain a link between landscape and human activity. Some links or comparisons need further development.

Level 3  Progress 1

Your young person is beginning to use map-reading methods within Level 3 tasks. They need prompts or support and their accuracy is not yet consistent.

They can find some physical and human features using different maps when guided. They need support to interpret more complex information.

They can identify useful evidence from two sources and suggest a conclusion about landscapes and human activity when prompted. Their explanation may be brief or incomplete.

Brazil & Amazon Rainforest

Level 3 Progress 4

Your young person independently gives detailed explanations of why people move to Brazilian cities. They analyse at least three linked problems in an informal settlement and make a supported judgement about how effective different improvements may be.

They explain waterfall formation as a connected sequence using precise vocabulary. They also explain at least three detailed links between the Amazon's climate, rainforest structure and the ways plants or animals survive there, including unfamiliar examples.

They independently combine precise evidence from maps, climate graphs and other sources. They use locations, patterns, values, comparisons and calculations accurately to explain the Amazon climate and reach well-supported conclusions.

Level 3 Progress 3

Your young person clearly explains rural-to-urban migration using relevant push and pull factors. They explain at least three problems experienced in an informal settlement and suggest an appropriate way to manage each one.

They accurately explain at least three linked processes in waterfall formation. They also explain at least three links between the Amazon's climate, its physical environment and the ways rainforest plants or animals are adapted.

They accurately locate Brazil and relevant features, interpret at least two maps, climate graphs or sources, use values to compare patterns and reach a clear conclusion. They give a simple explanation for the Amazon's hot, wet climate.

Level 3  Progress 2

Your young person describes why people move to cities using some push and pull factors. They explain some informal-settlement problems and suggest relevant improvements, although some links need more detail.

They describe the main stages of waterfall formation and some features of the rainforest. They explain some links between adaptations and the hot, wet climate, but parts need greater accuracy or development.

They locate Brazil and extract relevant information from maps or climate graphs. They describe and compare some patterns using values, but some locations, calculations, climate explanations or conclusions need more accuracy.

Level 3  Progress 1

Within Level 3 tasks, your young person identifies some reasons for migration and some informal-settlement problems when prompted. They need support to explain causes and why an improvement may help.

They label some waterfall or rainforest features, order some formation stages and identify an adaptation when guided. They need support to explain how the processes or environmental links connect.

They locate Brazil or extract simple information from a map or climate graph when prompted. They need support to describe a pattern, compare values, explain the climate or reach a conclusion.
